***EXCEPTIONAL NEW 'SIGN OF THE TIMES' STUDIO ALBUM RELEASED APRIL 24TH ON STEAMHAMMER / SPV***

Illustrious German heavy metal / hard rock guitarist Axel Rudi Pell has lined up the release of his utterly excellent new studio album 'Sign Of The Times', on April 24th on Steamhammer / SPV as a digipak CD, jewel case CD, double 140 gram (red with black swirls) vinyl (with printed inner sleeves) LP, limited edition (1,000) Deluxe Boxset, containing limited digipak CD, double gatefold red transparent vinyl LP, A1 double-sided poster, photo card + sticker, plus download and stream.

Having worked with long-time co-producer and engineer Charlie Bauerfeind on his last nine studio albums, Axel opted instead to work with the engineer of his live "Magic Moments" (2015) and "XXX Anniversary" (2019) albums to put down 'Sing Of The Times', his 18th studio album, with stunning results. Axel reflects; "I knew from the start that Tommy Geiger was the right man for the job and he proved it. Everything worked out fine."

Furthermore, both American musicians in the band - singer Johhny Gioeli and drummer Bobby Rondinelli - were on fire when they added their magic to the mix. Axel states that "First of all Johnny has outdone himself during the recordings; he certainly gave more than his usual 100 percent this time around. Because he has been performing a lot lately, he's been singing live a lot. Secondly, we've never had a better drum sound with Bobby in the band and he is on his fourth album now, thanks to his new Snare drum called 'Black Beauty'."

'Gunfire' with its double bass assault, is indubitably Axel's best opener of the last ten years or so, while mighty the 7 - minute - plus long epic title track (which was created in a pretty unusual way during a sound check on the last tour), is nothing other than a resounding sonic delight. The up-tempo track 'The End Of The Line' impresses with its long, undisputedly catchy chorus, whereas the ballad 'As Blind As A Fool Can Be' is as touching as ever.

But then the second half of the album sees Axel delivering some interesting surprises as he breaks with his own traditions several times. 'Wings Of The Storm' is a modern-day homage to the Coverdale/Hughes-led line-up of Deep Purple, but delivered in Jimi Hendrix style. The intense 'Waiting For Your Call' sees one of Gioeli's best vocal performances, while the Reggae intro on 'Living In A Dream' left his other bandmates, Volker Krawzcak (bass) and Ferdy Doernberg (keyboards), in awe. 'Into The Fire' ends the album in the typical, well-known epic Pell way, but with less lengthy, more song-oriented, and much more melodic guitar solos; characteristic of the entire album.

Lyrically, Pell stayed away from his beloved mystical moments (kings, knights, wizards and the like) and went for more realistic subjects, in line with the album's 'Sign Of The Times' title. "There are a few of the love/hate relationship songs, but most of the lyrics deal with the situation our planet is in right now, that's why the clock on the cover shows two minutes AFTER midnight. We live in a very dangerous environment in terms of climate change, religious wars and public safety".

Axel Rudi Pell's most recent studio album, 'Knight's Call', which crashed into Germany's national top 10 album chart and the UK's top 40 rock chart, was universally acclaimed on release in 2018. Classic Rock's Rich Davenport rated 'Knights Call' 7/10, stating "Pell's Stratocaster-on-steroids tone drives riffed-up rockers, adds weight to the balladry and anchors the epic 'Tower Of Babylon'. Overlaid with Johnny Gioeli's (Hardline) resonant vocal attack, underpinned by Bobby Rondinelli's (Rainbow) propulsive drumming and generously adorned with Pell's lyrical lead guitar playing, it's an album that shows its roots but still sounds fresh."

Powerplay's Tony Pijar awarded 'Knights Call' 10/10, noting "Fast approaching forty years in the music business, Axel Rudi Pell continues to deliver at an astonishing level. Following in line with previous releases, we've got it all here: hard rocking, guitar-oriented tracks, powerful Zep/Purple/Rainbow epics, and those poignant ballads - all done with Pell's warm and full Strat sound at the core. Whereas his last two releases, 'Into The Storm' and 'Game Of Sins' were good, but missing that intangible something to make each record extra-special, 'Knights Call' surpasses those releases in aces."

Now 'Sign Of The Times', which outshines even its much lauded predecessor, is all set to be proclaimed a career-defining, landmark album, propelling Axel Rudi Pell ever higher into hard rock's heady stratosphere.

***MONUMENTAL 'XXX ANNIVERSARY LIVE' ALBUM RELEASED JUNE 7TH ON STEAMHAMMER / SPV***

Virtuoso German Heavy Metal Guitarist Axel Rudi Pell will celebrate three decades as a solo artist with the release of his brand new 'XXX Anniversary Live' album as a double Digipak CD, triple 180 gram vinyl (gatefold with printed inner sleeves) LP, download and stream on Steamhammer / SPV on June 7th. 'XXX Anniversary Live', moreover, will come out on the same record label that released Axel's debut 'Wild Obsession' in 1989, his contract with SPV having lasted 30 years - longer than the average marriage. "SPV and I have grown together, we have witnessed highs and lows and we've managed to get through them all," reflects the 58-year-old musician with a smile.

SPV have sold more than 1.6 million of Axel's albums, while his songs have been streamed more than 37.5 million times, figures he could never have dreamt of when he first started out. Axel declares that "If the whole thing hadn't taken off, I'd be bored to tears in my trained job as an industrial management assistant to this very day." Ever since his very first chart entry with his fourth studio album "Between The Walls" in 1994 (no. 90 in the German charts), Pell has known that he's been heading in the right direction and would never have to go back to that day job.

Particularly important has been his flair for talent; Axel states that "In Germany there hardly were and still aren't any singers who are compatible with my music." For this reason, he has thought in international terms from the start, his first few albums featuring some of the world's best vocalists in the hard rock genre: Charlie Huhn (ex-Ted Nugent, Gary Moore, Victory, now with Foghat), Rob Rock (ex-Impellitteri, Driver) and Jeff Scott Soto (ex-Yngwie Malmsteen, Talisman, now with progressive super group Sons Of Apollo). When former Hardline frontman Johnny Gioeli joined in 1998, they formed a creative unit that has lasted ever since, no end in sight. And after ex-Rainbow/Black Sabbath/Blue Öyster Cult drummer Bobby Rondinelli joined the Pell fold in 2013, the band – which also features keyboardist Ferdy Doernberg (since 1998) and bassist Volker Krawczak (since 1989) – has made another huge leap forward in terms of quality.

Over the last thirty years Axel Rudi Pell has been one of the constant and eminent figures of the international hard rock circus. Since 1999, Pell has played the main stage of Wacken Open Air in Germany, the world's biggest heavy metal festival, six times; "Wacken and I have grown together, too. It's fascinating to see how many fans you can reach with your own songs." When Axel and his band won the opening slot for Heaven & Hell (the Ronnie James Dio-fronted version of Black Sabbath) in Germany in 2009, the legendary singer saluted his support act, saying: "You've got the job because you're good."

Even in Russia Pell is a star in his own right. He shared the stage at an award show at the Kremlin in Moscow at the end of March 2019, performing alongside renowned acts such as Chris De Burgh, Michael Bolton and Leona Lewis, before selling out a 2,000-capacity venue the night after. "The fans sang along to all the lyrics; I couldn't move anywhere without signing autographs and having selfies taken." That Pell hysteria has led to another Russian adventure; he is now set to perform at the prestigious 'White Nights' festival in St. Petersburg in July 2019.

"XXX Anniversary Live", a stunning document of his most recent tour, was not planned at all, but the recordings, from Bochum and Budapest among others, were so good that Axel felt he just couldn't scrap them. A more than worthy follow-up to "Magic Moments", (his 3-hour anniversary show at the 'Bang Your Head' festival in 2014, where he celebrated 25 years as a solo artist), "XXX Anniversary Live" is an exhilarating, glorious celebration of Axel Rudi Pell's monumental career to date.

***TOWERING NEW 'KNIGHT'S CALL' STUDIO ALBUM RELEASED MARCH 23rd ON STEAMHAMMER /SPV***

Ace German heavy metal axe man Axel Rudi Pell has lined up his seventeenth studio album, 'Knights Call', for release on March 23rd on Steamhammer / SPV as a Digipak (+ poster), CD, double 180 gram (red with black swirls) vinyl LP (+ CD in paper sleeve), plus limited edition (1,000) Deluxe Boxset, containing the Digipak CD, double vinyl LP, stainless steel skull beer mug, patch, A1 double sided poster, photocard and sticker.

'Knights Call' is an even more compelling record than its predecessor, 'Game Of Sins', which charted high in the national album charts in Germany (#11), Switzerland (#10), Sweden (#21), Austria (#42) and The Czech Republic (#75), plus breached the UK's Rock and Metal chart (for the first time) when released in January 2016.

Axel Rudi Pell has been living his very own dream for nigh on 30 years since the release of his debut solo album in 1989, never following trends or fashions, but always driven by his singular musical taste, selling more than 1.5 million albums and building a huge live following around Europe along the way. "As long as I can do what I like I'm the happiest man in the world" states Pell, who is continuously on the lookout for a better chorus, a better solo, a better bridge, a better song; "writing songs is like a lot of things in life: It's my way or the highway!" he concludes.

Aware at all times of his fans, the live atmosphere was continually at the back of Axel's mind while writing 'Knights Call'; "For me, direct feedback is essential. Playing only in the studio would be boring. Who would sign up for that?". 'The Wild And The Young', with its soaring chorus and swirling, melodious solos, is a case in point; "I knew from the very beginning that 'The Wild And The Young' would be the opener for the album" states Pell.

'Long Live Rock', the first out and out hard rocking anthem since 2006's 'Rock The Nation', (from his 'Mystica' album), is similarly set to go down a storm live. 'Beyond The Light', featuring goose-bump moment creating vocals from guest American singer Pamela Falcon, who has lived in Axel's home town Bochum for over 30 years, is the album's mandatory ballad. And whereas epic anthems such as 'The Crusaders Of Doom' and the mighty Led-Zeppelin-meets-Rainbow-esque 'Tower Of Babylon' focus on mediaeval mysticism and fantasy folklore, 'Slaves On The Run' addresses the here and now. "We are all slaves in one way or another! Rock's supposed to stand for self-determination and freedom, but that seems to be history now. Everybody is looking for the fast buck and for attention, everybody is online all the time, for just a couple of sad clicks and likes. We are on the road without arriving wherever that might be. Is this what life is all about, being stuck to a computer?"

The majestic sound captured on 'Knights Call', comes courtesy of Axel's incredibly talented German-American dream team band, featuring US singer Johnny Gioli and US drummer Bobby Rondinelli. 'Knights Call' packed with big hooks, classic riffs, fluid, virtuoso guitar solos and gorgeous grooves, is a masterpiece album which simply thrills to the core.

***New single 'Love's Holding On' featuring Bonnie Tyler released March 31st, taken from upcoming 'The Ballads V' album out April 21st on Steamhammer / SPV ***

German virtuoso heavy metal guitarist Axel Rudi Pell, who has been a leading light on the European melodic metal scene for well over three decades and sold more than 1.5 million albums, is proud to announce the release of a brand new digital single (and video), 'Love's Holding On', featuring special guest star Bonnie Tyler, on Steamhammer / SPV, on March 31st.

'Love's Holding On', containing a stunning duet between Bonnie and long-time Axel Rudi Pell band singer Johnny Gioeli, is one of four new recordings included on 'Ballads V', part five of his successful ongoing ballad compilation album series, due out on April 21st. Axel states that "Bonnie Tyler only records songs she personally likes, so I wrote this tune just for her and she really loved it. She came to the studio and we recorded it within a couple of hours; the result is amazing!"

'Ballads V' follows on from his most recent studio album 'Game Of Sins', which charted high in the national album charts in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria and The Czech Republic, plus breached the UK's Rock and Metal chart, (for the first time) when released in January 2016.

'Ballads V' also contains a sublime new 8-minute-long song, 'On The Edge Of Our Time', as well as Axel's rocking cover version of Ed Sheeran's composition 'I See Fire', the theme track of 'The Hobbit' movie; "I always liked that tune, but I wanted to hear it Pell-style, so we took a piano instead of the acoustic guitar and added a beautiful solo at the end." A previously unreleased live recording of 'The Line', from the Rock Of Ages Festival in Germany, which Axel co-headlined at the end of July last year, is also included.

Among many other highlights are a live cover of Deep Purple's mighty 'Mistreated', recorded during Axel's monumental 25-year anniversary show in Balingen in July 2014, with Doogie White (ex-Rainbow, MSG) on vocals and erstwhile Rainbow keyboard legend Tony Carey also performing; "It was a 14-minute emotional ride for everybody involved on that stage that night," recalls Pell. Mention must also be made of Axel's atmospheric take on Neil Young's 'Hey Hey My My', inspired by the legendary TV series 'Sons Of Anarchy'.

'Ballads V' will be available as a Digipak CD (with poster), double purple 180 gram vinyl gatefold LP (with printed inner sleeves + CD in a cardboard sleeve), and limited (1,000) edition Boxset (containing Digipak CD, CD single, 5,000 mAh ARP branded powerbank, sticker and photo postcard).

***SUPERB NEW ‘GAME OF SINS’ STUDIO ALBUM RELEASED JANUARY 15TH ON STEAMHAMMER / SPV***

German Heavy Metal Guitar Wizard Axel Rudi Pell, who has sold over 1.5 million albums as a solo artist since his 1989 debut, has lined up the release of ‘Game Of Sins’, his 16th studio album, on Steamhammer / SPV, on January 15th 2016. ‘Game Of Sins’ will be available as a ten track jewel case CD, as a digipak, with bonus track and poster, plus as a double gatefold, 180 gram black vinyl LP, with printed inner sleeves, + CD in a paper sleeve.

‘Game Of Sins’, a storming, hugely accomplished melodic hard rock opus, is an even more consummate offering than its MUCH acclaimed predecessor, 2013’s ‘Into The Storm’, which was awarded 10/10 and Album Of The Month in Powerplay Magazine’s February 2014 issue.

Axel began working on ‘Game Of Sins’ as soon as he’d stepped off the stage of his star studded 3 hour plus 25th Anniversary show (in front of 15,000 fans at the ‘Bang Your Head’ Festival in Germany), on July 11th 2014, the live recording of which, ‘Magic Moments’, went straight in to # 1 on the German and Swedish DVD charts, # 4 in Switzerland, #7 in Austria and # 17 in Holland on release this year.

While you would have thought that Axel might invite his numerous famed festival guests to participate in the studio, he comments that “I never even thought of having guest musicians on this album”. That’s because the incredibly accomplished Axel Rudi Pell band, long-time stars of the German and European melodic metal scene, are sounding tighter than ever, not least courtesy of (ex-Rainbow / Black Sabbath / Blue Oyster Cult) drummer Bobby Rondinelli, who joined the ARP fold in 2013.

“Booby Fits Like A Glove” states Axel, continuing “Bobby is the perfect drummer, who always knows what to play; on ‘Game Of Sins’ even more so than on ‘Into The Storm’”. Furthermore, Rondinelli’s crisp, resonant drumming features much higher in the mix on ‘Game Of Sins’ than on ‘Into The Storm’, contributing in no small part to the much fuller, more resounding sound on the new LP; “Looking back, I have to admit that the drums on the last album stayed too much in the background”, notes Axel.

As a result, ‘Game Of Sins’ is way harder and grittier than previous releases, while each and every soaring composition comes topped with some of Axel’s best ever glorious, flowing guitar riffs, perfectly complemented by singer Johnny Gioelli’s soaring, expressive vocals. Furthermore, “Everybody involved agrees”, grins Axel; “There’s not a single filler on the album”, which he readily admits was not apparently the case on earlier discs.

Particular highlights include album title track ‘Game Of Sins’, packed with nine minutes of those epic structures and Arabian scales which Pell is so fond of, ‘Till The World Says Goodbye’, a dark, doomy, balladic soundtrack for Judgement Day, or ‘Sons In The Night’, which pays tribute to NWOBHM with its ‘Sons Of Anarchy’ inspired lyrics. Then there’s Axel’s real hard rocking version of the almighty Bob Dylan / Jimi Hendrix classic ‘All Along The Watchtower’, the digipak bonus track, which Axel had wanted to tackle for a long time; “That song is far from easy to arrange, but the result is definitely worth the effort” he states, concluding “Everything went to plan”.

‘Game Of Sins’, patently the work of a band at the peak of its powers, is a massive milestone landmark album, which can only elevate the Axel Rudi Pell Band’s star ever higher in rock’s heady stratosphere.

***“THE CREST’ DELUXE EDITION RELEASED JANUARY 17TH ON STEAMHAMMER / SPV***

Johnny Gioeli - Lead And Backing Vocals
Axel Rudi Pell - Lead, Rhythm, and Acoustic Guitars
Ferdy Doernberg - Keyboards
Volker Krawczak - Bass
Mike Terrana - Drums

“The brooding and mystical Pell of yore is back with a vengeance. To these ears, ‘The Crest’ is easily his best effort since ‘Shadow Zone’, possibly even since the magnificent ‘The Masquerade Ball’... and really, what more of a recommendation do you need than that?” (Dave Cockett, Fireworks, June / July 2010 issue).

“‘The Crest’ sees Axel getting a little heavier while retaining every bit of melody that he’s known for. Once again, Johnny Gioeli puts in a stunning performance. Following the dramatic intro piece, ‘Too Late’ rocks hard and ‘Devil Zone’ is slower and a little more epic. The whole album comes across as ten classic examples of everything that made Axel Rudi Pell popular in the first place: big hooks, classic riffs and fluid (and unpredictable) solos.” (Andrew Hawnt, Powerplay Magazine, June 2010 issue)

“There’s no messing about or foolish experimentation here, no sir, just straight down the line melodic riffing and blistering solo after blistering solo, the genre standards helped no end by Johnny Gioeli’s fist-banging, leather-lunged vocals. Pell’s playing is, as ever, superlative and the production crisp and powerful.” (Essi Berellian, Classic Rock, July 2010 issue.)

To celebrate the success of German Heavy Metal Guitar Wizard Axel Rudi Pell’s latest studio album, ‘The Crest’, (released in April 2010), which charted high in the national album charts of Germany, Finland, Switzerland and Sweden, SPV / Steamhammer Records will re-release it as a deluxe edition on January 17th 2011.

‘The Crest’ Deluxe Edition includes a bonus track, ‘Dreaming Dead (Extended Version)’ plus a full live bonus CD with over 70 minutes playing time, recorded at the Rock Of Ages Festival on July 31st 2009, a new cover and a new booklet with unseen photos and liner notes. ***BRAND NEW "THE CREST' STUDIO ALBUM RELEASED APRIL 26TH ON STEAMHAMMER / SPV***

Johnny Gioeli - Lead And Backing Vocals
Axel Rudi Pell - Lead, Rhythm, and Acoustic Guitars
Ferdy Doernberg - Keyboards
Volker Krawczak - Bass
Mike Terrana - Drums

Exceptionally talented German Heavy Metal Guitar Wizard Axel Rudi Pell, who has been at the forefront of the European melodic metal scene for nigh on three decades now, is set to release his brand new album, 'The Crest' on SPV/Steamhammer on April 26th.

'The Crest', Axel Rudi Pell's 13th studio LP, is a gloriously traditional hard rocking metal album, containing ten deeply melodic, classic rock compositions, on which American Vocalist Johnny Gioeli's powerful, compelling vocals intertwine perfectly with Axel's nimble, fluid fretwork.

"'The Crest' sounds absolutely typical of me and my band. In a way, the new tracks mark a return to our roots. And I'm proud to say that there isn't one double bass number !" comments Pell, noting the current trend in metal of bands increasingly relying on drum arrangements which adapt to the melody of the song; one of his long standing song-writing trademarks.

Axel Rudi Pell took care of production himself for the first time on The 'Crest', when he, bassist Volker Krawczak, keybord player Ferdy Doernberg and drummer Mike Terrana recorded the album at W.A.T. studios in Bochum between November 2009 and January 2010. Pell worked on the vocals in great detail with singer Gioeli via Skype before Johnny recorded his vocals in the US. The album was mixed, as usual, by Charlie Bauerfeind at the Mi Sueno Studios in Tenerife and at the Blind Guardian's Twilight Hall Studios in Grefrath, Germany.

Commenting on the obviously magic musical chemistry between himself and Johnny, Pell says that "Naturally, I came up with main features of the melody and lyrics, but I'd be ill-advised if I didn't listen to Johnny's suggestions", continuing "There's real teamwork in our band."

While each and every one of the ten tracks on this consummate album stand out in their own right, mention should be made of particular highlights, such as the eight minute 'Dark Waves Of The Sea (Oceans Of Time Part II: The Dark Side)', the ballad 'Glory Night', and the instrumental 'Nobless Oblige (Opus #5 Adagio Contabile)'.

HISTORY

Axel Rudi Pell was born on 27 June 1960 in Bochum, Germany. Having spent his first eleven years listening to children's and chart music, the discovery of Ritchie Blackmore and Deep Purple irrevocably changed his life in 1971. This self-educated guitarist soon became a sought-after instrumentalist on the local music scene before he formed his first group, Steeler, in 1981. Steeler sold over 30,000 copies of their commercially most successful release, Strike Back, and brought out their fourth and final album, Undercover Animal, in 1988. Pell then formed his own band with Jörg Deisinger (ex-Bonfire), drummer Jörg Michael, bassist Thomas Smuszynski (ex-U.D.O.) and US vocalist, Charlie Huhn (Ted Nugent, Gary Moore, Victory). Their debut album, Wild Obsessions, arrived in the stores a year later, followed by Nasty Reputation, for whom Pell enlisted the American singer, Rob Rock (M.A.R.S, Impellitteri), who was then replaced during the subsequent German tour by former Malmsteen vocalist, Jeff Scott Soto. With Soto as a new member, the third album, Eternal Prisoner (1992), was undeniable proof that the band had found their own, unmistakable sound. A year later, Pell brought out The Ballads, an album featuring his most accomplished rock ballads. With Between The Walls (1994) and the live recording, Made In Germany, (1995) Pell stuck with his traditional style even in the post-grunge era. The subsequent Black Moon Pyramid (1996) was the second Pell album in succession to make it into the German album charts, as have all subsequent albums.

Following the departure of Jeff Scott Soto at the end of 1997, US vocalist Johnny Gioeli (ex-Hardline) joined the Axel Rudi Pell band and recorded Oceans Of Time, (1998) the commercially most successful album at that time by the Axel Rudi Pell band. Johnny's crystal clear vocals have subsequently enhanced all ARP albums to date including The Ballads II in 1999, Masquerade Ball in 2000, Shadow Zone in 2002, Kings & Queens in 2004, Mystica in 2006, Diamonds Unlocked in 2007, Tales Of The Crown in 2008 and now The Crest in 2010.

Highly accomplished German Heavy Metal Guitar Wizard Axel Rudi Pell, who has been an integral part of the German melodic metal scene for over 25 years, is set to release his eleventh studio album, 'Mystica', on SPV Records on September 25th, 4 days prior to his band's first ever live appearance in the UK at Derby's Bloodstock Festival Sept. 29th.

Axel Rudi Pell doesn't deny such role models as Richie Blackmore or Jimi Hendrix but breathes new life into this classic melodic hard rock style - never more so than on 'Mystica', a brilliant modern speed/ power metal album bursting at the seams with soaring, melodic metal anthems.

"It was a conscious decision not to try out something completely new in stylistic terms" says Pell, continuing "We have our own style, but on 'Mystica' we sound even more homogenous and musically coherent". On top of that, Pell has continued to grow as a guitarist. "I think my extensive experience has had a positive effect on my musical style. The solos on the new numbers sound even a touch more emotional."

The subsequent Black Moon Pyramid (1996) was the second Pell album in succession to make the German album charts, as did Pell's eighth offering, Magic, in 1997. Johnny's crystal clear vocals have subsequently enhanced all ARP albums to date including The Ballads II in 1999, Masquerade Ball in 2000, Shadow Zone in 2002, Kings & Queens in 2004, and now Mystica in 2006.
